– Date & Time: 10 May, 9am – 1pm CET

– Course Overview: This workshop is two-fold and will introduce the legal concept of Duty of Care (DoC). The second component is a participatory presentation on how to operationalize DoC through the example of the University College Copenhagen (UCC).

The concept of Duty of Care is the foundation of Safety Risk Management. Before embarking on the journey of keeping staff and volunteers safe, an organization has to establish what their DoC is. Most organizations know they have a DoC to their staff and volunteers. Most organizations also know that DoC is divided into legal and moral DoC but not many organizations know more specifically, how to identify what their legal and moral DoC is and can be defined. Do you for instance know what your organization is legally obliged to provide to your staff and volunteers?

Once the foundation of your organizational DoC is established, an organization can start to identify and build their safety risk management framework. Having a safety risk management framework is fundamental to any organization. However, the issue of integrating the safety risk management framework and processes into the organization can be very complicated and demanding and requires all levels of the organization to be involved in it, not only the safety managers. Knowing where you are and where you would like to end up in terms of having safety risk management framework is the next step in the journey.

– Course Activities: All participants will identify their organizational DoC which will be discussed. Prior to this Yvonne Frederiksen from the law firm NorrBom Vinding will present what DoC means based on Danish companies and organizations that have staff that travel abroad. The University College Copenhagen will present their findings on the legal and moral DoC for students and how this is implemented in an organization of 22.000 students and staff.

Based on the two speakers’ presentations the participants will identify what DoC is in their organizations and how mature a setup they have. When that is done it will be easier to identify where, as an organization, you would like to be in 6 months, 12 months, and 5 years from now. You can draw up a DoC safety change management plan when you know where you are and where you would like to be.

– Course Objectives:

  • All participants will have a better understanding of the current legal and moral elements of Duty of Care
  • Based on discussions and the presentation participants will be able to create their DoC definition to be integrated in their organization
  • Participants will be able to identify the current maturity level of their organizational DoC and from there identify where they would like to be in the future

– The target audiences for these courses are managers, staff and advisers who are participating or responsible for managing Safety Change Management in their organizations.

  • Liban Normann Holm, University College Copenhagen
  • Yvonne Frederiksen, Norrbom Vinding
